When you store photos and videos on SSDs, hard drives, SD cards, optical discs, and other media, parts of them may become corrupted or unviewable.
I’ve been disappointed myself when a few photos of my cat became unviewable or parts of a video started to look distorted.
You also make copies when you buy a new computer and transfer your data, right? Even in those situations, it seems that data on SSDs, hard drives, and SD cards can degrade or become partially corrupted.
What is M-DISC?
M-DISC is a new recording medium developed by the American company Millenniata, consisting of DVDs and Blu-ray discs with enhanced durability. It is resistant to aging caused by light, heat, and humidity, and according to the company’s tests, it can preserve data for hundreds of years.
It uses a metal-based material in the recording layer that is resistant to degradation
M-DISC uses a metal-based material for its recording layer, and during data writing, a laser creates physical grooves and ridges, much like engraving. Since the metal-based recording layer is resistant to degradation, durability is dramatically improved compared to conventional optical discs.
The surface also features a strong protective layer (hard coat), making it resistant to scratches and dirt.
Number of Writes
M-DISC can only be written to once. Since it cannot be physically overwritten, only additional data can be appended. Therefore, as data tampering or accidental deletion is essentially impossible, it is suitable for recording and storing important data.
However, it is generally not possible to reuse the disc by erasing it and writing new data.
Compatible Drives
M-DISC can be read by most disc drives manufactured since around 2005. However, writing is only possible with an M-DISC-compatible drive. While the media shape and reading method are the same as those of conventional DVDs and Blu-ray discs, writing involves using a laser to physically create pits and lands, so a compatible disc drive must be used for recording. Reading can be done with a standard drive.
While the use of optical discs has declined in recent years, M-DISC is a good choice for preserving photos, videos, and other files that you want to keep for the long term.
Preserving Memories Without Degradation
M-DISC is ideal for preserving photos and videos of your pets, travel memories, and special occasions like weddings. It would be disappointing if the data were corrupted when you look back on those precious memories decades later. M-DISC is well-suited for this purpose.
Preserving in analog form
You can’t read or view digital media without a drive. Experts say that while it’s unlikely drives capable of reading optical media created today will disappear within the next hundred years, there are some areas where digital media can’t quite match analog. They also say that if you print important documents and photos on paper, put them in an album, and store them while being careful about temperature, humidity, and light, they can last a hundred years.
Summary
Precious photos and videos of memories, as well as important documents, can become damaged or degrade even if stored on SSDs, hard drives, SD cards, or standard optical media. Even if you back them up, errors can occur during the copying process. Memories with your beloved pets, photos and videos from once-in-a-lifetime events, and photos and videos taken on trips can be preserved without degradation for a long time if stored on M-DISC.You’ll need a compatible drive to write to an M-DISC. It’s also a good idea to print out photos and documents on paper and store them in a controlled environment with regulated temperature, humidity, and light.
